PRECONFERENCE

TUESDAY, AUGUST 8 - 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

 

Spirituality:  Often the Most Uncomfortable and Neglected Part of Person Planning” – Maryam Mostoufi

Five of the founding members of Spiritual Voices will use interactive exercises, video, live music, dance, art, mini-lectures and storytelling to provide an historical and practical look at spirituality and its importance to all individuals, including those with disabilities and their family members.

In addition to sharing facilitation roles for the session Dr. Maryam Mostoufi, the Soul Doctor, will give a series of mini-lectures throughout the day. She holds a doctorate of ministry and is currently Chief of the Bureau of Best Practices within the Department of Human Services, Division of Developmental Disabilities. She also serves as the coordinator and stagehand for the other presenters.

Carl Nave, the Sage, will share some of the profound spiritual comments he is known for throughout the day and serve as MC.

Tony Richards, the Musician, will incorporate his music into his personal story. You will be invited to join him in whatever way the Spirit so moves you.

Kim Smith, the Storyteller, will describe the role faith plays in her life and her involvement in her congregation. Her energy and passion are guaranteed to get everyone involved.

Will Speir, the Writer and PR Man will share portions from his manuscript “A Boy of Prayer” that he wrote after being treated for the second time for leukemia.

 

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the Pre-conference workshop:

Participants will know—

 

  • The role spirituality plays in person-centered planning.
  • Why spirituality is often an uncomfortable part of the person centered planning process.
  • How historical beliefs and practices have impacted individuals with disabilities.
  • The difference between spirituality and religion.
  • The factors impacting spiritual growth and development.
  • The role of staff in supporting the spiritual needs and beliefs of individuals with DD & their family members.
  • The many forms of spiritual expression.
  • The factors impacting spiritual growth and development.
  • The role of staff in supporting the spiritual needs and beliefs of individuals with DD & their family members.

 

 Participants will be able to—

 

  • Address the area of spirituality within person-centered plans in a meaningful way.
  • Offer spiritual choices.
  • Identify an individual’s preferred means of spiritual expression.
  • Recognize and resolve barriers to spiritual expression.
  • Refrain from imposing their own spirituality and religion on others.

 

Resource Materials

Participants will receive a notebook filled with extensive resource materials. Among these will be a draft spiritual assessment tool that can be used with individuals that have limited reading or verbal skills.
