The Amazing Trial Services Period

presented by:  Tim Williams and Sally Ritchey

Do you want to do a better job of keeping your good employees while more effectively removing poor employees from service?  The development of new employees involves a significant investment for any organization, particularly for non-profit agencies serving persons with intellectual disabilities or mental illness.  Traditionally high turnover rates place these agencies in the position of constantly hiring, orienting and training.  New employees typically serve a trial service period, sometimes called the probation period.  Regular employment is established only after the employee successfully completes trial services.  Frequently, agencies fail to take full advantage of the opportunity that the trial services period provides to help reduce turnover, improve the overall level of supervision and to effectively integrate new employees into the culture of the workplace.  This six hour pre-conference session provides a comprehensive, proven strategy for effectively using the trial services period.  Takeaways from the session will include:

  • A full understanding of the significance of the honeymoon period (the first six months of employment) and the fact that the law permits an employer to create a trial services period.
  • Tools that will specifically improve first-level supervision as it applies to trial service employees and to the workgroup as a whole.
  • A fully developed system for determining whether a new employee has demonstrated the attitude and abilities necessary to be successful as an agency employee.
  • Knowledge of the benefits of formally recognizing the transition of an employee from trial service to regular employment status (graduation).
  • A blueprint for an approach that substantially increases the likelihood of retaining desirable employees.
  • Tips for using the blueprint to identify and remove undesirable employees more quickly and at less cost, while satisfying legal requirements.
